Dreadful as ever, Saturday rolls around and the grind is on. After hours spent tackling dirt, hair and dust, I’m left exhausted with an underlying feeling that a better job could’ve been done.
Lucky for me, last weekend I was armed with the Dyson Gen5detect™. This versatile Dyson cordless technology can clean all floor types, hard-to-reach places, mattresses, sofas and stairs.
Opening the box of Dyson’s most powerful HEPA cordless vacuum², I was greeted with its striking purple handle and box of attachments. I was fascinated by the unique LCD screen on the handle.
With impressive HEPA filtration³, the Dyson Gen5detect™ traps 99.99% of particles down to 0.1 microns.³ The LCD screen then displays the size and volume of particles counted by its piezo sensor and gives you scientific proof of a deep clean.⁴ Better still, the LCD screen shows your remaining run time, along with the selected power mode. I was keen to see what results were detected in my ‘clean’ home.

Before I took the Dyson Gen5detect™ for a whirl, I charged its battery. The base easily attached to the battery dock with a satisfying click. As it charged, lights flashed on its battery pack and the LCD displayed its progress.

With its solid, intuitive design and easy to understand instruction manual, I effortlessly assembled the vacuum and attached the Digital Motorbar™ cleaner head ready to tackle upstairs.
Dyson Gen5detect™ Digital Motorbar™ Cleaner Head
The Dyson Gen5detect™ whirred to life with strong suction and minimal noise when turned on. I could switch easily between 3 power modes using its silver button and settled upon Auto/Med mode for a balance between power and run time.
The Dyson Gen5detect™ was extremely easy to manoeuvre with its comfortable grip and sturdy design. Even with 14 cyclones and unique technology packed inside, it zipped around effortlessly. The agile Digital Motorbar™ didn’t falter when collecting dust, dirt or crumbs. Even when faced with tumbleweeds of hair, the hair removal vanes in the brush head prevented any clogging.
The Digital Motorbar™ also intelligently adapted to different floors.⁶ As I moved from carpet to lino it increased the power and suction as required.
I even used the Boost mode to remove some stubborn carpet dust. Long gone were the weekends spent battling dust, dirt and hair only to barely succeed. The Dyson Gen5detect™ removed mess with ease! As I vacuumed, I checked the battery and particle count on the clear LCD screen. The final count revealed a huge mixture of grime with lots of coarse particles collected.
With the Dyson Gen5detect™ I could quickly and easily clean a big space in no time and found myself enjoying the lounge room sooner than expected.
Dyson Gen5detect™ Fluffy Optic™ Cleaner Head
I’d never seen a vacuum equipped with a light blade and was curious to see how the Dyson Gen5detect™ handled hard floors. I seamlessly detached the Digital Motorbar™ from the wand and attached the Fluffy Optic™ cleaner head.
I smugly looked at our bathroom and concrete floors; it seemed that there was no dirt or dust around. Wrong! With the Fluffy Optic™ cleaner head, the targeted blade of light reveals twice the amount of invisible dust⁷ and I was shocked to discover the filth on our floors which was also confirmed by the LCD screen.
The Fluffy Optic™ tool was nimble, smooth and easy to operate as it seamlessly glided around. The slender brush easily weaved into awkward spaces, such as under chairs and flush against walls, to pick up particles hidden to my eyes.
Dyson Gen5detect™ Hair Screw Tool
With the amount of hair hanging around you would think we lived with an army of pets. The reality was, a combination of everyday living and a couch donated from a cat owner had resulted in a hairy situation. The Dyson Gen5detect’s Hair Screw tool that removes and de-tangles hair from pet beds, car seats and stairs was the attachment for the job.
With its unique shape and anti-tangle design, I could easily place the Hair Screw tool flush against the wall and stairs to collect hair without any obstructions. For the couch, the attachment smoothly and thoroughly collected the cat hair with no pull, drag or catch. The LCD screen revealed most of the particles were small like allergens – that would explain why I was always sneezing when in the area!
Once finished, I felt more accomplished than ever, with all the energy to enjoy the rest of my Saturday. With the versatile attachments and innovative design of the Dyson Gen5detect™, I had simply and effectively cleaned our home.

Now it was time to give my boyfriend’s car some love. The Dyson Gen5detect™ easily transforms to a handheld in a click. This was perfect for reaching all the nooks and crannies of the car’s interior with the combination tool.
The Dyson Gen5detect’s light and portable design easily manoeuvred around the steering wheel, gear stick, stereo, glove box and vents for a thorough and quick car clean.
Looking at the particle count on screen, the attachment’s wide nozzle and dusting brush did an amazing job of removing both coarse and fine particles with little dent in the vacuum’s battery life.
Emptying the Dyson Gen5detect™ with Ease
What’s better than a simple clean? A simple emptying process. I was super impressed at the ease of disposing all the collected dirt thanks to the hygienic ejection mechanism of the Dyson Gen5detect™. I easily pulled the red lever which automatically opened the bin’s lid for a hassle-free, no-touch disposal.
