“Absolutely incredible. Wearing the green and gold on the world stage is the highest honour imaginable, and something I’ll never take for granted.”
Introducing Olympic middle-distance runner Jye Edwards.
Edwards first made his start at 6-years old, competing in athletics alongside his three siblings. Encouraged by his sports-minded family, he showed a keen interest in cricketing before noting his improved skills and natural knack for running as a teenager, joining the Bankstown Sports Athletics Club, and focusing his efforts on the discipline.
Making his Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Edwards’ journey towards the highest level of athleticism was littered with trial and tribulation. Overcoming injury after injury from 2017 onwards while striving to qualify for the Olympic level, he faced recurrent knee injuries, stress fractures, muscle strain and shin splints with few months in between each incident to recover.
Despite the odds stacked against him and with the Tokyo Olympics looming, Edwards managed to persevere, scoring gold while coming within seconds of qualifying at the Box Hill Classic in April with an impressive time of 3:35.46. Edwards, motivated and undeterred, subsequently secured his place for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games just weeks later, scoring victory and qualifying at the Australian Track and Field Championships with a time of 3:33.99.
At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Edwards proved his merit and exceptionalism in the world of elite international athleticism, placing seventh with a time of 3:42.62. Unfortunately, this meant narrowly missing out on a spot in the automatically qualifying top six.
Harvey Norman is proud to support Olympian Jye Edwards as he prepares for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
“I feel exceptionally fortunate to be a Harvey Norman Brand Ambassador and have their support leading into the Paris 2024 Olympics. Having the freedom to prioritise my running career as a professional athlete wouldn’t be possible without their unwavering support, so for this I am forever grateful.” – Jye Edwards, Australian Olympian.
