“I feel extremely honoured and excited to show everyone what I do”
Busting it down while breaking new ground, Jeff Dunne is primed and ready to prove himself in the Paris 2024 Olympics’ latest frontier, the debuting sport, ‘Breaking.’
Known better by his fellow breakers as “J-Attack”, the 16-year-old from Casuarina in northern NSW is already a master of his craft. Born in the Philippines and adopted by an Australian family at a young age, Dunne was introduced to breaking while observing his sister’s hip-hop classes. Since then, Dunne has spent the better part of 10 years honing his skills through rigorous practice and fierce competition.
Breaking, perhaps erroneously better known to some as “breakdancing,” is the only debuting sport at this year’s Olympics. Featuring a tournament of intense, one on one battles, breakers must improvise an original routine live on stage in front of a panel of judges. Points are awarded to breakers based on the athlete’s creativity, personality, technique, variety, performativity, and musicality. In order to excel in each of these fields, Dunne spends four to six hours a day developing routines, upgrading his dynamic ability, and working on his movement and style.
Now a Harvey Norman brand ambassador, Dunne cemented his spot on the 2024 Australian Olympic Team by winning gold at the Oceania Breaking Championships at Sydney Town Hall in November 2023. This tremendous achievement required outstepping 37 other competitors from nations such Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Fiji, and Australia.
In an effort to stay ahead of the competition, Dunne has been keeping a strict training regime that involves monitoring his diet with a nutritionist while waking up at 5am four days a week for breaking training, and two strength training sessions. A workload that is only likely to increase as the world gets closer and closer to this year’s Olympic Games.
Between the spectacular nature of the sport, and Dunne’s extreme levels of talent and commitment, The Paris 2024 breaking competition is going to be one event you don’t want to miss. In the meantime, you can keep up to date with Jeff on his Instagram and TikTok pages.
