How I Kept My Cool With The Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™

With the mercury really starting to climb, I couldn’t wait to do this Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ review.

My lucky team-mates have previously road-tested Dyson’s clever range of air purifying bladeless fans. They smugly enjoyed streams of cool air free from pollutants, while I looked on jealously, slowly turning into a hot Christmas roast.

However, Harvey Norman’s Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ meant it was finally my turn to be comfortable. With the ability to react in real-time to indoor air quality and remove all manner of airborne pollutants, I was very much looking forward to breathing easy and keeping my cool.

Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ First Impressions

This is no mere fan. This is a Dyson purifying tower that employs clever Air Multiplier bladeless fan technology for powerful, smooth airflow. Plus it features a seriously heavy-duty HEPA Glass filter that removes up to 99.95% of the pollutants in the air.*¹

You might not think the air in your home has any of these particles to worry about. However, indoor air quality can be up to 5x worse than the air outdoors. This effect is even more pronounced in the extremes of winter and summer, when we tend to seal our homes up to keep comfortable.

We’re not just talking about big particles here like dust or hair. We’re talking about particles as small as 0.1 microns – which the Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ can capture. For reference, a typical bacteria cell – invisible to the naked eye – is a few microns wide. What this means is your air is being cleansed of the things you can’t see, and then some.

However, this Dyson filter system sweats more than the small stuff. As is proudly printed on its stylish housing, this machine can remove what are known as Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs, from the air too.*²

If you live in a new building or have recently renovated, all those new paints, materials, sealants and more are constantly releasing VOCs like benzene and acetaldehyde into the air. Even in an older house, they’re ever-present thanks to common cleaning products like ammonia and many other sources. It’s comforting to know the Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ can keep them at bay.

This layer of activated carbon also helps to remove common odours from the air such as pet smells. Yes, this Dyson is perfect for the cat and dog lovers amongst us!

An Air Purifier That Autoreacts!

I have pretty chronic asthma, so I’ve always needed an air purifier in the home. One thing that’s bothered me about every purifier I have previously owned is the manual control setup. That’s especially true in today’s world where everything is usually smart, connected and automated.

With a manual setup, you’re expected to always keep on top of the speed setting. And there’s never one setting that fits all situations.

Bucking this trend is the Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™. It’s an air purifier with smarts that adapts to the conditions in your home.

This clever Dyson machine uses three integrated sensors and a unique algorithm to constantly analyse the air and react accordingly. No more having to remember to turn the purifier up or down depending on what’s going on around you. Just that feature alone puts it well ahead of the other models I’ve owned over the years. All before I’d even taken it out of the box!

The Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ is also a Sensitive Choice-approved product. This means its perfect for not only asthma sufferers, but those dealing with eczema, hayfever and more.

How Does The Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ Perform?

Everything was easy and painless to set up. The Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ is essentially assembled in the box. All I had to do was push the two filter halves into place and click the cover on, and we were good to go.

Filter for the Dyson Cool Autoreact Purifier

The Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact’s colourful LCD screen had all the information I’d ever want about the air quality in my house – giving you proof of cleaner air. I could cycle through immediate and 24-hour air quality, temperature, humidity, nitrogen dioxide levels (a nasty component of vehicle emissions), the particles and VOCs that were captured, and even a handy graphic showing how much life remained in the filter.

What I really liked about setting up and controlling this Dyson cooling purifier was the included remote. This machine boasts powerful airflow suitable for spaces up to 81m³, so it was great to be able to have it in one corner of my combined kitchen/living area and not have to get up or walk over to turn it on or change any settings. The remote is a handy size and stored neatly atop the purifying tower with a clever magnet setup.

350° of The Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™

With the ability to rotate up to 350°, it didn’t matter where I put the Dyson Purifier. I was always cool as a cucumber despite the balmy warmth outside. Whether in the kitchen or on the far end of my lounge, all it took was one press of the remote and I was bathed in cool, pure airflow.

This Dyson tower fan was also able to oscillate so the whole room could enjoy a constant movement of cool air. Electricity isn’t getting any cheaper, so it was great to be able to keep cool without switching the power-hungry air conditioner on. Plus, the Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ won’t dry the air out like air-cons do – great for those suffering from allergies.

This Dyson Purifier also boasts a handy Night mode. Clean air during the night is essential – otherwise, I wake up stuffy and sneezing. In Night mode, the helpful display screen is dimmed and the purifier fan is quieter. This was perfect for me as a somewhat lighter sleeper.

I was intrigued to see a button on the remote that seemed to indicate reverse airflow. I quickly discovered this was for the Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact’s Diffused Airflow mode. Instead of directing a stream of air directly outwards, this pushes the air down and around the back of the machine – perfect for cleaning the air in your home on colder days. Don’t be fooled by the name – this Dyson purifying tower is great for pure air all year round.

Purifying The Air

Going back to the first time I switched the Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ on, it sensed a fairly good level of air quality in my home – but not quite perfect. It seemed a few of those nasty VOCs were hanging about in the space. The Dyson immediately got to work.

In no time, the air was squeaky-clean and the purifier fell totally silent, ready to face the next wave of pollutants. It would only take until that night’s dinner for a real test!

Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ and Cooking Pollutants

One of the biggest sources of indoor pollution is cooking. It’s hard to believe such a simple everyday activity could harm your air quality. But think about it – who hasn’t set off the smoke detectors at some point with a steak that’s sat a tick too long under the grill? Or even with a funny-shaped piece of bread getting stuck in the toaster? These unfortunate accidents will have the house smelling for days as a constant reminder to book in that cooking class.

The truth is, this doesn’t just happen when food burns – it’s an unavoidable by-product of the cooking process. Whether your meal is now charcoal or not.

There’s really nothing you can do to stop the air from filling with these nasty little particles while you cook up a storm.

My own culinary skills leave a fair bit to be desired, but I can usually avoid burning the house down. Even so, it was shocking to see just how much small particle matter, or PM2.5, that the Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ detected in the home while dinner was being made. Keeping in mind that more than about 110 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic metre of air is considered unhealthy, the purifier detected almost three times that – nearly  300ug/m³. The colour-coded display even turned an alarming shade of purple to indicate the air was far from fresh. Who even knew there was a level beyond red?!

Yet, there was no need to panic. This powerful Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact™ had sensed the situation unfolding and immediately set about pumping the room full of clean air. With the strong stream of cool air, it was able to draw the contaminants in from all corners of the space. Only a few minutes after this spike in airborne particle matter, things were back to a reassuring green. Small particles like these can be really harmful to your health, so it was nice to know these were ending up in the HEPA H13 filter and not the lungs.
